Character at the Top

1 Chronicles 12:1-2 “These were the men who came to David at Ziglag, while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed; they were the relatives of Saul from the tribe of Benjamin).”

David had wonderful leadership skills which resulted in admiration and loyalty from his fighting men. Though he was in bad circumstances, he was loyal, skilled in battle with the certainty of a call from God to lead the nation of Israel. These were the kinds of men who were attracted to him.

Principle: In building a leadership team, go with good character, proven talent, and a passion to succeed, and lead by example.

ProServ, the legend among sports agent companies, fell when founder Donald Dell met a wave of departures by team members of the company. They had made tennis stars into millionaires and among other accomplishments, branded Michael Jordan.

At the peak of success, Dell’s team members felt that they were part of a growing team of sports negotiators who were world class, but the founder did not have the character qualities that his team had and when they discovered it, they left.

Discussion:

1. Have you seen an organization led by a strong, capable person who proved to have character defects? Describe.

2. As a potential team member, how can you avoid making the bad decision of going to work for such a person?

3. What are the character indicators when considering a position under leadership?
