Mark 12:41-44 “Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.’”
Principle: God sees our giving, cares about our motives, and calculates how much we have left over.
Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. demonstrated to rich America how to give to charity with minimal cash flow and plenty of publicity. He pledged to give away 85% of his estate to charitable causes – the largest charitable gift in U.S. history.
In contrast,Jesus talked about the benefits of giving privately, quietly, gladly and proportionately. He was not impressed with the wealthy Pharisees who blew a trumpet with their offering (Matt 6:2), or the showiness of the rich tossing their heavy coins into the offering plate. The lady who gave out of her poverty impressed Him. Our giving proportions could start with the tithe – a tenth.
Discussion:
1. If you think the tithe is legalism, read Genesis 4:2-4, 14:20, 28:20, and 21.
2. Look at the Christian organizations which, in your view, are doing exactly the right things in this world. Are they in need? How could you partner with them?
3. Consider an anonymous, joyful gift to a needy family member, friend or stranger.
