Get a Life

1 Timothy 6:17-19 “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they make take hold of the life that is truly life.”

The rich in the New Testament have been 0 for 2 until now (the rich young man who would not follow Jesus and the fool who wanted to build bigger barns). So to Timothy, the pastor of the church where John and Mary attended, God says, ‘tell the rich to be generous.’“

Principle: Stewardship is the awareness that we are caretakers of God’s assets – managers, not owners.

Here are a few practical thoughts on how to wisely manage God’s money.

1. Examine every purchase considering its ministry potential. Instead of a luxury purchase could the money serve to feed the hungry or win the lost?

2. Pray before you spend. God will provide legitimate needs at the right price, but we need to ask Him to help us do that.

3. Understand the difference between spending money and saving it. Saving is setting aside for a future purpose; it stays in our bank ready to be used for our needs or the needs of others.

4.  Look at the long-term cost of purchasing. If there is maintenance cost or if it leads to other on-going costs, be sure to count that in the decision.

5. Set a budget and live by it. It is easy to fritter away a large sum of money, especially if you think that it is yours to spend. How would you feel if you entrusted an investment sum to a broker only to find out later that he spent it on himself?

Remember that 100% of earthly assets are God’s. Since all your money is God’s money the prayer is – Lord, how would you like me to invest it today?

Enjoy your riches and become a distributor. Invest in needy people and delight in their response. Lay up treasure in heaven. Consider it as an investment in your future.

Discussion:

1. How much personal reserve is sufficient these days?

2. What are some good and wise ways to help the poor and needy?

3. Describe your feelings in a generous gift-giving moment.
