Romans 14:19 “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.”
This verse follows the discussion of meat which has been offered to idols and its availability in the local meat market. Godly decisions on such matters lead to peace and building up fellow believers.
Principle: Christian business decision-making has higher standards than secular business decision-making. Your choices impact others.
The following summary statements are decision-making principles that apply to business decisions as well as “everyday” decisions. They raise the bar for decision-making.
Decisions:
- Must build people up. 1 Corinthians 8:1
- Must benefit people. 1 Corinthians 10:23
- Must be good for others. 1 Corinthians 10:24
- Must glorify God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
- Must not cause others to stumble – Christian or non-Christian. 1 Corinthians 10:32, 33
- Must have the interest of others at heart over your own interests: Philippians 2:3, 4
- Must be Biblically based. 1 John 2:4
Are these ethical standards higher than normal? Absolutely. Are they beneficial to the decision maker and the community? Absolutely Do they guarantee profitability? Not necessarily.
Are they do-able? Not apart from the Spirit of God. Will they require a conscious effort? Yes. Read Romans 14:19. The benefits will be peace, wisdom, and improved relationship with others.
Discussion:
1. Describe a business leader you know who lives up to these standards. Do they run a successful business?
2. Do you have a decision to make in your business? Measure that decision against the Biblical standards listed above. You will reap benefits.
