Jeremiah 5:27-28 “Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor.”
This statement is amid a description of rich and powerful people who are deceptive and opportunistic. Among other things, they ignore the plight of orphans.
Principle: God has a special heart for orphans, and He expects us to do something good for them.
It is surprising how often God talks about orphans. There are 30 Bible passages urging care for orphans. No wonder Christians have led the charge to assist them. I am not surprised to see the financial support for global orphans, over 147,000,000 of them in the world.
I see many people, both Christians and non-Christians, adopting children from all over the world. It is expensive and complicated. The emotional problems are great but not unsolvable.
In the United States there are roughly 300,000 legal orphans in the foster care system. There are ways that churches could approach the care of these children.
Businessmen could use their influence in the 300,000 churches in America to approach the problem. That could involve financial sponsorship, psychological counseling, legal aid, church big brothering, planned involvement of church families and more.
One solution is offered by a Southern California organization called Mentor Me Ministries, a group that brings businessmen and boys into healthy mentoring relationship. Perhaps this and other similar ministries could use a financial boost from partnership with your business.
Discussion:
1. What ministries to orphans is your church involved in?
2. What are the complexities in ministering to orphans?
3. What is a first step you could take to uncover minister possibilities to orphans?
