Luke 10:38-41 “… Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’”
Martha was hospitable, industrious, and organized. She was assertive and direct in her communication. Her sister, Mary, was more interested in their guest than she was in, well, anything.
Principle: Time spent listening to Jesus and worshiping Him is the highest value.
To be successful in work, be like Martha. Go with your strengths, keep focused, plan, be strategic, do the operational things, be creative, organized, passionate, have a plan, goals, and have a mission plan.
To be successful in life, be like Mary from the beginning of your day through the end of your workday. Sit at Jesus feet. This has to do with attitude and amount of time spent. Do it daily and continue through the day. Take Him to work with you. Put Him in the driver’s seat. Pray without ceasing.
Listen to Him. Read His Word.
It is wonderful to hear what others have to say about Jesus but it is best to hear what He says. Go direct. Study the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
For 30 days listen to the Gospels. Get the dramatic version of the Gospels and listen to His story for 30 days in a row. A half-hour a day will take you through the Gospels four times. You will not need a commentary. It will change your life.
Worship Him. See Him in creation. See Him in the lives and hearts of other Christians. Admire Him in the circumstances and work of your life. Get discernment to understand that He is praying for you and cares about all the details of your everyday. Gather.
Talk about Him with others. Go to church. Practice worship. Loosen up. Be free! The benefits are permanent.
Discussion:
1. Do you begin your day with “Jesus” time? How long, how consistent, how beneficial is it to you?
2. What is your take-away from that time?
