Give Lavishly

Deuteronomy 15:7-8, 10 “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns … do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend him whatever they need. Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.”

The attitude and style of helping a needy brother is important to God. He notices the heart of the person who gives and the one who receives.

Principle: Giving to the poor is a command from God. Attitude matters. It is connected to a success principle.

A business-owning couple in Houston, Caroline and Bob Luther of Lakewood Church, have worked a unique plan to honor the poor on Sundays. They call it Luther Limousine Ministries. They pay limousine services to pick up 40-70 discouraged and needy people from centers, shelters and halfway houses and drive them to church.

The church provides refreshments, clothing, and a welcoming fellowship.

Limousine companies donate the services at reduced prices, or for free. All the drivers are Christian volunteers. The results are lifted spirits all the way around and there are spiritual benefits from the people receiving and the people giving.

If you want God’s blessing in your work give to the poor. It’s a promised return.

Discussion:

1. What are some creative ways you have observed in giving to the poor?

2. Who are the new-poor in your circles?

3. Why does creativity matter in the case of helping the new-poor?
