Pray before Plunging In

Joshua 9:14-15 “The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.”

The Gibeonites knew about Israel’s victory at Jericho and Ai and they decided to try for peace with Israel at the cost of enslavement. They loaded their donkeys with worn-out sacks and old wineskins. They wore patched sandals on their feet. Their bread and food supply were dry and moldy. They lied and said they were from a distant country. The Israelites tasted the food and bought the lie, failing to pray about the decision.

Principle: Do not make important decisions in business life without inquiring of the LORD.

How often we go on in business getting ourselves into situations which turn into nightmares because we do not bother to stop and say, “God, what do you want me to do? Is this your will or does it simply look pretty good to me?”

James, the brother of Jesus, wrote “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)

Someone said … “He who knows not and knows that he knows not is a wise man, but he who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool.”

Inquire of the Lord before making important decisions. Don’t be a fool.

Discussion:

1. How did the Israelites and Gibeonites pay for this poor decision? Read Joshua 9.

2. Share about a poor decision you made because you didn’t seek the Lord.

3. What important decision are you needing to make today? Have you prayed about it?
