Stress Relief

Matthew 11:28-30 “’Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’”

This was Jesus’ word of encouragement to the disciples after they heard about the execution of John the Baptist and the destiny of those who would also reject Him. It was a reminder that the path ahead would not be a “rose-strewn pathway’” with any promise of relief.

Principle: In stressful times, Jesus has an offer you should not refuse.

A fifty-two-year-old executive had triple bypass surgery and later started cardiac rehabilitation. No one in his group was overweight and the majority exercised regularly and watched what they ate. The group included an under 50-year-old retired Marine officer who was physically fit, a 34-year-old female physician in otherwise good health, and a 38-year-old contractor who rode a mountain bike strenuously on a regular basis.

They decided what they had in common was stress in their lives. They all believed they could handle more work, more responsibility, and more pressure. They thought they could “do it all.”

We are not responsible to “do it all.” Everything does not have to be done today. Turn it over to God. Allow some time to be unproductive. Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Prepare your mind for quiet and recollection. Take time to think. Get rest and relief – the kind of rest that Jesus freely offers.

Discussion:

1. What are the sources of stress in your life and business?

2. When was the last time you took a break from those stressors?

3. How can you embrace peace and rest from the Lord even in the midst of your stress?
