Table Grace

Jeremiah 5:24 “They do not say to themselves, ‘Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’”

God was speaking to the people of Judah warning them of things to come. They were disobedient to Him, ignoring Him and had written God off as not being important in their daily life. In fact, some were shaking their fist in the face of God in defiance. This chapter describes the resulting judgment coming to that nation.

Principle:It may be harder to remember that God controls the world economy when we live in the information age – but He does.

God controls the food and water provision of the world, without which there would be no life.

Under-the-ground resources like oil and gas are also in God’s hands. When huge power companies like Edison have to raise rates 18% due to shortages in natural gas and Calpine (power) and other huge power companies miscalculate the cost and availability of God’s resources, it is a reminder about who actually controls the resources.

The food chain depends on God and the ability to transport, process and preserve that food. So even a convoluted and complicated supply chain ought not hinder us from seeing God as being in control over all things. Food on the table is reason enough to thank Him for His provision and sustainability. Bowing the head and thanking God for a meal not only honors God but often opens opportunities for conversation about Him with others.

Discussion:

1. Why does it seem awkward to “give thanks” in a public place such as a restaurant?

2. In a business setting with people not familiar with your Christianity, what would others be thinking if you bowed in prayer before eating?

3. What results have you experienced when praying before a meal in a business setting?
