2 Kings 4:1-7 “The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, ‘Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.’ Elisha replied to her, ‘How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?’ ’Your servant has nothing there at all,’ she said, ‘except a small jar of olive oil.’ Elisha said, ‘Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side’…when all the jars were full … she went and told the man of God, and he said, ‘Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.’”
This widow cried out to Elisha, the prophet, from a place of desperation. She had nothing of her own, except for a small jar of olive oil. It turned out to be exactly what she needed.
Principle: God accepts what little we have and multiplies through faith and obedience.
Moses’ rod – David’s sling and 5 stones – the five fish and two loaves – the widow’s coins. The Bible is full of examples of what God can do with what we might call “little.”
Take the example of the advertising copywriter who took the time to notice the beggar she passed on the sidewalk. She changed the sign beside the empty tin cup which said “I’m blind. Please help me” To “It’s a beautiful day I wish I could see it,” resulting in a cup full and running over with contributions.
Since everything we have, big or small, comes from the Lord and still belongs to Him, there’s no limit to what He can do with our “little.”
Discussion:
1. What small time, talent, or treasure or did God use in your life to do something large?
2. What small time, talent or treasure have you seen God use in other’s lives?
3. What small time, talent or treasure is He asking you to release for His use today?
